ICAR urges researchers to develop high yielding oil seeds
Dharwad, Apr 14 (UNI) Emphasising the importance of oilseed crops in Indian economy, Indian Council for Agricultural Research Assistant Director General(oil seeds and pulses) Dr V D Patil has urged the researchers to develop high yielding varieties and hybrids with matching production technologies.
Inaugurating a two-day annual workshop of Sesame and Niger Research workers at University of Agriculture Sciences (UAS) here yesterday, he recalled the success of the Technology Mission on oilseeds which brought self sufficiency in oils in the country. But off late, the scenario has changed and the country was now importing 36 per cent of its oil requirements, he lamented.
Dr Patil called upon the technocrats, development agencies, industries and farmers to give major thrust on oilseeds crops through area expansion, diversification strategies, productivity enhancement and improving the processing efficiency.
He stressed on the sesame crop development because of its multiple uses and its export potential. "There is great demand for white sesame seed in international market", he added.
