Rajkot, Apr 14 (UNI) Spurred by the successful public rally at Porbandar, where Congress president Sonia Gandhi addressed a largely-attended meeting to mark culmination of ''Gandhi Sandesh Cycle Yatra'', the Gujarat Congress has decided to launch rallies in North Gujarat and other parts of the state to woo voters in the run-up to the assembly elections due in December this year.

The rallies will highlight the state government's failure and anti-farmer and anti-student policies practised by the state government.

Addressing a press conference here today, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee President, Bharatsinh Solanki said Congress would hold a rally in Ahmedabad on October 2 this year, while the dates for other rallies were being finalised and would be announced soon.

The Congress is opposed to the Gujarat government's liberal prohibition policy and will launch agitation programmes against it, Solanki said.

Students of Gujarat could not get admission to courses in higher education because of exorbitant tuition fees and have been compelled to go out of the state, the Congress leader alleged adding that the Ministry of Human Resource Development at the Centre is ready to help the state government to sort out student issues.

Responding to a question regarding spiralling prices under UPA rule at the Centre, Mr Solanki said several steps have been taken to curb the price rise by the central government. Further he alleged that the state government, on the contrary, has not reduced the fuel tax and has also not abolished the octroi that would also help contain rising prices.

Regarding recent poaching incidents in Sasan Gir, the last abode of the Asiatic lion where six lions were hunted down last month, opposition Leader in Gujarat Legislative Assembly Arjun Modhvadia, said an expert team comprising three members would arrive here and assess the situation during a three-day visit between April 14-17. A report will be submitted to the central government, he said.
