Moga, Apr 14: A devastating blaze, triggered by sparks from an electricity transformer, swept through a 20-acre field, reducing standing wheat crop and a huge quantity of dry fodder to ashes in Mahesari village of this district last evening.

Two fire tenders from Moga and a large number of villagers on tractor trollies struggled for over two hours before the fire could be brought under control.

The affected persons whose crops were destroyed in the fire were identified as Kewal Singh, Angrez Singh (both brothers), Suba Singh, Binder and Kewal while dry fodder of Bhupinder Singh Mahesari was burnt in the fire.

This was the second such fire in the district within 24 hours.

On Thursday night, 24 acres of wheat crop was destroyed in Logarh village of the district.

Punjab Mandi Board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, who rushed to the Mahejar village to express sympathy with the affected families, has urged the authorities to order special survey of crops destroyed in the two villages and provide prompt compensation.

He also appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to provide full compensation to the affected farmers.
