LeT plot to assassinate Azad foiled in Ramban

Jammu, Apr 13: Police foiled a Lahkar-e-Toiba plot to assassinate Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad during a public rally in Ramban yesterday and arrested four ultras, including a suspected Congress worker and his wife, sources said today.

The sources said the four ultras were arrested soon after Mr Azad left Ramban. However, a Pakistani fidayeen, managed to flee.

Although top police officials declined to comment on the issue, the sources said a red alert has been sounded along the Jammu- Srinagar Highway between Ramban and Banihal and a massive hunt launched to nab the fidayeen.

The ultras were were part of the gathering that had assembled to listen to the Chief Minister's speech.

Acting on information, police apprehended suspected Congress worker Farooq Ahmed Wani and his wife Haseena Begum before Mr Azad's arrival. Two other ultras Akhter Malik and Abdul Rashid, residents of Dulligam, Banihal, who were picked up following information from the Wani couple, disclosed that they had been assigned the task of taking the Pakistani fidayeen upto the dais.
