'India-Russia relations unique in the world'

Moscow, Apr 13: Indian ambassador to Moscow, Kanwal Sibal, today said relations between India and Russia were ''unique'' in the world which had weathered all the changes that occurred in the last six decades.

''India and Russia have built up a unique relationship of stability and solidity in the last 60 years. Our relations have weathered all the changes that have occurred in international relations during this period,'' Mr Sibal said at a ceremony to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations at the DP Dhar Hall in the embassy.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Denisov represented Russia at the ceremonial meeting.

Stressing the ''new equations'' that have recently been emerging to cope with growing challenges and expectations, he said India-Russia ''ties have not only remained undisturbed, they have grown stronger.'' He added the compatibility of longer-term national and geo-political interests between the two countries, immensely contributed to remarkable continuous and steadfast bilateral relations.

''Our relations are problem-free,'' Mr Sibal said, adding ''It is based on great mutual trust and confidence. That is why, our defence relationship is so strong.'' On his part, Mr Denisov expressed confidence that the long history of relations between India and Russia, would continue to grow in the mutual interest of the two countries.

A number of cultural events are on the cards dedicated to the occasion. Famous Bharatnatyam danseuse Rama Vaidyanathan and santoor player Tarun Bhattacharya will perform at Moscow International House of Music this evening.

The gala event has been organised jointly by Indian embassy's Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre (JNCC) and RussianF ederal Agency of Culture and Cinematography.

A special exhibition to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries will be held on April 16, at the Russian Foreign Ministry building. It is being organised by the Ministry's Centre of History of Russian Foreign Service and JNCC.
