Young journalist chronicles path of Assamese cinema

Guwahati, Apr 12 (UNI) As the Assamese film industry awaits the return of its 'golden phase', a young journalist from the state has decided to contribute his bit by dedicaling a book to the industry.

Azhar Alam, a self-confessed film buff, has written a book that trails the birth, rise and decline of Assamese film industry, with in-depth records of films made in the state.

Aggrieved by the present state of the film industry here, Azhar said, ''I have grown up on films. I cannot do much for the revival of the industry but at least I can remind the people of its tribulations and inspire the struggling industry people to move on.'' His 200-page book, 'Asomiya Filmon ka Safarnama'(The Journey of Assamese Films), is due to hit the stands by April 20.

The writer while explaining his choice of language in his book, said, ''I want to take the Assamese film industry to the national podium. With Hindi as the language of my book, I can reach a wider section of audience.'' Azhar chronicles the Assamese film industry in his 35-chapter book, covering 32 subjects, with its first chapter recording the details of all Assamese movies from 'Joymoti'(1935) to 'Jatinga Ityadee'(2007), about their making, the actors, story line and other such details.

The second chapter is dedicated to in-depth analyses of the industry's struggle to prosper in the 80s and its relapse into a slumber again, with a short revival in the early part of this decade.

In another 30 chapters of the book, the writer explores topics like the making of the first Assamese movie 'Joymoti', use of music in Assamese movies, choreographers, Bihu - the main festival of the state in the movies, romance, and many more such untouched topics.

The book also charts the major male and female actors in the industry, with the accurate record of the number of films they acted in, along with the year of the release of each film.
