Mumbai, Apr 12 (UNI) Two new taxiways got functional today at the the Chhtrapati Shivaji International airport (CSIA), which will help reduce the runway occupancy time and improve the efficiency of the aircraft movement time between the runway and the terminal areas.

The opening of the new taxiways, is part of the on-going upgradation of the runway system at the CSIA. The 'parallel taxiway and the 'rapid exit taxiway' has been built over a bridge under which Mithi river flows. It covers a distance of 240 meters to the beginning of the runway, allowing aircraft the maximum take-off distance avialable without backtracking, an official release said.

With the two rapid exit taxiways and the extended parallel taxiway A4 in place, runway occupancy time for aircraft landing and taking-off is likely to be reduced considerably.

Additionally, this would facilitate quick surface movement of the aircraft. Also, with the addition of A4 backtracking by aircraft ont he runway would be eliminated, resulting in time saving of approximately 1.6 minutes per aircraft for all aircraft requiring the maximum take-off distance.
