Meghalaya woo investors to invest in state

Shillong, Apr 12 (UNI) Inviting industrialists to come and invest in the state in different sectors, Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang said insurgency will not be a problem as it was being dealt with firmly in the state.

Speaking on the 3rd North East Business Summit, he also asked the investors to make their own assessment of the security climate in the state. ''We are ready to enter into dialogue with Industry to take all possible measures to remove fears and install a sense of security,'' he added.

Informing about the investment opportunities in the state, the Chief Minister said, Meghalaya is emerging as a major player in the Cement and Ferro Alloy industries. Agriculture and Horticulture produce as well as timber forest produce constitute to be a vast resources base for the growth of various kinds of processing industries, he asserted.

He further said Tourism is another area which can be developed into a dream destination of North East.

On Information and Technology, the Chief Minister said Meghalaya has ample scope in this sector stating that the English speaking population in the state was an asset for IT enabled service providers.

He said with the proposal for setting up an IT park in Shillong by STPI, investors should find Meghalaya an attractive destination for IT enabled services.

Mr Lapang also said the state government was paying special attention to Garo Hills to improve security scenario and to attract investment in the area.

He said the government would acquire 182 hectares of land at Mendipathar, East Garo Hills to develop an industrial growth centre there.

Claiming that Meghalaya was politically 'stable' and inspite of changes of governments, the Chief Minister said the industrial policy has remained unchanged.
