Lawyers wounded in police lathicharge

Allahabad, Apr 12 (UNI) Several lawyers were injured here today at Kutchery, when police resorted to lathicharge on the last day of filing nomination papers for Uttar Pradesh assembly election.

A heated exchange took place between police and some lawyers, who were forcibly trying to enter with a candidate Rajesh Yadav, who was brought from Naini Central Jail for the nomination from Allahabad (West) seat.

It is alleged police jawans caught a lawyer by the collar and pushed him. At this, the lawyers became angry and indulged in brick bats on police jawans and shouted anti-police slogans.

Angry cops, chased the lawyers and beat them, even in their chambers. They also damaged furniture and other articles. Most of the victims of the police lathicharge were old lawyers, who could not move swiftly. This went on till this evening.

Policemen were also wounded in brick-batting by the lawyers.

SSP B D Polson himself was managing the affairs on the spot.

Some mediamen including cameramen covering the event also received injuries.

Meanwhile, police had been deployed in the area in strength.

The lawyers have demanded action against the Colonelganj station house officer other policemen, besides a judicial probe.
