Industrial production rises to 11 pc

New Delhi, Apr 12 (UNI) India's industrial production rose 11 per cent in February 2007 as compared to 11.4 per cent in the same period last year, official figures today said.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of February 2007 stand at 168.3, 271.2, and 192.5 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 6.3 per cent, 12.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent as compared to February 2006.

The cumulative growth during April-February, 2006-07 over the corresponding period of 2005-06 in the three sectors have been 4.9 per cent, 12.1 per cent and 7.2 per cent respectively, which moved the overall growth in the General Index to 11.1 per cent.

In terms of industries, as many as 15 out of the 17 industry groups (as per 2-digit NIC-1987) have shown positive growth during the month of February 2007 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

The industry group 'Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures' have shown the highest growth of 128.9 per cent, followed by 27.4 per cent in 'Basic Metal and Alloy Industries' and 16.1 per cent in 'Cotton Textiles'.

On the other hand, the industry group 'Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles (except cotton)' have shown a negative growth of 88 per cent followed by 2.2 per cent in 'Metal Products and Parts, except Machinery and Equipment'.

As per Use-based classification, the Sectoral growth rates in February 2007 over February 2006 are 10.4 per cent in Basic goods, 18.2 per cent in Capital goods and 13.7 per cent in Intermediate goods.

The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 1.6 per cent and 9.7 per cent respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 7.6 per cent.

Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for February 2007, the indices for January 2007 have undergone the first revision and those for November 2006 have undergone the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies.

There are no significant revisions in the indices for November 2006 and January 2007.

Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of February 2007, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
