M'shtra: HC allows to promote 614 police officers

Mumbai, Apr 12: The Bombay High Court today allowed the state government to give promotions to 614 police officers, which were held by the state because of a Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) order, issued in December last year.

While passing an interim order, a Division Bench of Justice F I Rebello and Justice R M Sawant allowed the state to promote 240 Assistant Police Inspectors, 282 Police Inspectors and 92 Deputy SPs / Assistant Police Commissioners.

In response to a petition filed by some lady PSIs from Mumbai, the MAT had ordered the state government to consider training period while evaluating seniority of police officers from the rank of Sub-Inspectors.

The lady PSIs had moved MAT seeking implementation of the state government's policy decision to merge Ladies and Gents PSIs cadres.

The MAT order had serious implications, as training period for ladies and gents PSIs was different and as contended by the state, it would have been very difficult to re-evaluate seniority of thousands of officers in the cadre.
