Godfrey Phillips to present bravery awards to 8

Lucknow, Apr 12 (UNI) Godfrey Phillips will award eight personalities, including one posthumously, for their physical and social courage in the state capital today.

Of the seven winners, four are from the national capital, while two each from Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

An 18-yr-old late Javed Ahmed, who lost his life while saving 10 people in the Meerut electronic fair inferno in March last year, has been given gold medal for physical bravery.

Announcing the 15th Bravery awards, committee general secretary Harmanjit Singh said this time, a new category 'Mind-of Steel' award has been introduced, which carries a cash component of Rs 50,000.

The awards will be given at a function to be held this evening by Lucknow University vice-chancellor R P Singh in presence of cinestar and bravery award ambassador Preity Zinta.

The gold award winners will receive a cash prize of Rs 50,000, while the silver Bronze medal winners will get Rs 40,000 and Rs 30,000 along with the certificates respectively.

Javed, a resident of Delhi, had gone to Meerut to take up a job as salesman in the Meerut electronic fair when the incident occurred.

His parents will take the award.

Angaja Foundation, headed by Ms Raka Sinha Bal, will receive the Gold medal in the social acts of courage category for extending yeomen's service to help the victims and families of child rape in Delhi.

Physically challenged and an architect by profession, 33-yr-old Anita Pal has been selected for the maiden 'Mind of Steel' award for her determination to overcome her shortcoming.

Sunil Chauhan of Uttarakhand will receive silver medal in the physical bravery section. Sunil saved a child from the mouth of a leapard and was critically injured in the act of bravery.

Former BSF official Jagat Singh Chaudhury of Uttarakhand has be awarded the silver medal in the social act section for his role mode for agro-forestry in the Rudra Prayag region.

Mr Moon Johari of western Uttar Pradesh has also been given the silver medal in the social acts of courage category for working towards eradication of illiteracy.

Love for humanity and service to spastic children by Dr Madhumita Puri of Delhi has earned her the bronze medal in social acts of courage, while Indian Airforce employee R K Gokhle has won the bronze medal in the physical courage category for saving two people from 20 feet deep static water tank in front of Air Force Record Office building, Delhi.
