Bison calf is new attraction to zoo

Chennai, Apr 12 (UNI) The Arignar Anna Zoological Park at suburban Vandalur has a new member -- a new born Bison calf.

The sex of the new born have yet to be identified as the mother was not allowing anyone near the enclosure. ''We are waiting for the urinary samples of the new-born to identify its sex,'' Zoo Director P L Ananthasamy told UNI here today.

The calf was delivered on April ten by a bison, who was shifted to the Zoo in 2004 after it strayed into the village at Udumalpet in Coimbatore.

This was the fourth calf born in captivity at the zoo. With this, the zoo now houses six bisons.

''It's normal for any wild animal not to allow anyone near its calf. Moreover, the bison was brought from the wild. It's character cannot go from it. That's why it is not allowing anyone near it,'' he said.
