Besra to reconstruct AJSU as students' wing

Jamshedpur, Apr 12: Founder of All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) and the chief of the Jharkhand People's Party (JPP) Surya Singh Besra said he would urge the Election Commissioner to recognise AJSU as its student wing.

AJSU was founded in 1987 as the students' wing of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha(JMM), but with the formation of the JPP by Mr Besra it acted as the students' wing of the latter. Former Jharkhand home minister Sudesh Mahto,however, converted the organisation as a political party and contested the elections.

Mr Besra said he would lead a JPP delegation and meet the EC in New Delhi soon and give an application urging it to recognise the AJSU as the students' wing of the JPP.

He said the AJSU would be revived as a vibrant student organisation, which led the Jharkhand movement in the late eighties and early nineties from the forefront.

Mr Besra said the JPP would not contest the coming Jamshedpur Loksabha by-poll which has been necessiated after the killing of JMM MP Sunil Mahto. He said the late Mahto's widow Suman Mahto would be the right choice to contest the by-election.

The JPP chief,however,criticised the call of the Nagarik Suraksha Samity (NSS)to launch ''sendra''(killings)against the ultras as it would violate the human rights.

Mr Besra urged the people to boycott the NSS as it had no right to take law in their own hands and termed the JMM's support to the organisation as suicidal.

The NSS, a village committee, was formed a few years back to counter the naxal menace in the East Singhbhum district with the active support of the district police but it became weak recently and a revival was being initiated after the killing of Sunil Mahto.

He said Jharkhand had inherited the naxalite problem from its parent state Bihar and attributed the problem to poverty and corruption.''Untill and unless these two things are eliminated, extremism will continue'', Mr Besra stated.
