Two children drowned in Hooghly river at Lochan Babur Ghat

Barrackpore, Apr 11 (UNI) At least two children drowned in the Hooghly river at Lochan Babur Ghat in North 24 Parganas near here today.

The body of one of the victims was recovered after searching for a couple of hours. Search is still on for the second victim, police said.

The victims were sons of a truck driver Md Murtaza.

While three minor brothers of Masjid Para Lane of Alam Bazar went to bathe in the river, elder brothers Abdul Aziz(11) and Md Chand(8) drowned.

When six-year-old Rohan who was sitting on the stairs of the Ghat, raised an alarm that his brothers had drowned, locals started looking for them.

Aziz's body was recovered after a couple of hours' searching. The police had sent the body to the Baranagar State general hospital, where he was declared dead.

Meanwhile, in another incident, a 22-year-old labourer from Deul Bari in South 24 Parganas today miraculously escaped from being buried alive after remaining trapped under a landside in a well in front of the Barrackpore railway station in Eastern Railway.

The victim Syed Ali Khan, along with another labourer, was excavating a deep well under a 'station beautification scheme' of the Railways when the incident occurred.

Although, one the labourers escaped almost unhurt, Ali Khan was trapped under the earth. Local fire brigade managed to rescue the labourer after an hour, a fire brigade personnel said.
