Bangkok, Apr 11: Suspected Islamic militants shot and torched a young woman in Thailand's troubled southern region this morning and bombed a government vehicle in a separate incident.

According to police, the 25-year-old Buddhist woman was shot at in the southern border Yala province, while she was riding her motorcycle to work in Yala town.

The assailants then set fire to the badly injured woman. Reports from Yala said it took time for the police to identify the victim's gender because she was so badly burnt.

In another attack in neighbouring Pattani province, insurgents bombed a government van, injuring two passengers.

More than 2,000 people have been killed since the outbreak of separatist violence in Thailand's Muslim-majority provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat three years ago.
