HC issues directions for protection to newly-married couple

Jabalpur, Apr 11 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the police to provide full protection to a newly-married couple -- a Muslim boy and Hindu girl -- of Bhopal on a petition filed by the boy's brother.

The petition stated that the boy's family members were being harassed by the police and the newly-married couple were being threatened.

The court issued notice to the state Home Secretary and the Bhopal Superintendent of Police and sought reply by April 30 in this regard.

Mohammed Shamim -- brother of Mohammed Omar, who married Priyanka, a Hindu girl, in Mumbai -- filed the petition. He alleged that police were threatening his family members and his brother Mohammed Shakil has been illegally detained.

The petition urged that Mohammed Shakil be released and the newly-married couple be provided complete protection on their arrival to Bhopal.
