Mathura, Apr 11 (UNI) Assailing the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today reiterated that criminals ruled the roost in the state.

''It is painful that the UP government is providing shelter to criminals. Even the police is hand-in-glove with them,'' Ms Gandhi alleged while addressing an election meeting here.

Over the years, criminal activities in UP had considerably increased. There was anarchy and no one was secure, she alleged.

''The 'Ganga-Jamuni' culture of UP, which had produced great prime ministers and leaders like Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira pandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Rajiv Gandhi has been ruined by communal forces. They have attacked social values and destroyed unity,'' she asserted.

Wooing voters in the name of Lord Krishna, she said the Lord always fought for truth and did not spare those who wanted to divide the society. ''Therefore, the development of UP is possible only if Congress wins the ongoing Assembly polls.'' UNI
