Bodies of nine new born babies found in drain

Coochbehar, Apr 11 (UNI) As many as nine bodies of new born babies were recovered from a drain in front of Toofangunj hospital in West Bengal's Coochbehar district this afternoon, official sources said today.

District magistrate Rajesh Sinha said while the civic workers were cleaning the drain, recovered nine babies packed in separate packets in front of the state owned Toofangunj hospital.

The news of recovery of the bodies sent shock waves across the district and many senior citizens dubbed it a case similar to Nithari in Uttar Pradesh.

Mr Sinha immediately ordered Additional Superintendent of police James Kujur and Chief Medical Officer of Health Sunil Kumar Seal to probe the infanticide.

Mr Seal reacting to the recovery of dead babies said the hospital does not do any abortion and whenever a new born dies the hospital immedaitely handover the body to relatives.

Meanwhile, the police swung into action and raided some nursing homes for investigation.

The bodies, beyond recognition were sent to a morgue for further investigation. It was immediately not known whether the bodies were foetuses or full grown babies. Search for more such bodies was on when the report came in.

Senior police and civil officials of the district rushed to the spot as scores of local people gathered there in curioscity.
