BDP for full-fledged container terminal port in Chennai
Chennai, Apr 11 (UNI) The Chennai Port has drawn up an ambitious Business Development Plan (BDP) to develop the port as a ''full fledged container terminal port'' at an investment of about Rs 5,000 crore in the long run and Rs 1,500 crore in the short run.
Deloitte, a British business development consultant appointed by the port, has submitted its report which had been forwarded to the ministry for approval, state Port Chairman K Suresh said while addressing a conference here on the development and annual achievements of the port.
The consultant had suggested both short and long term measures to develop the 125-year-old port as a full-fledged container terminal port taking into consideration the fact that 90 per cent of the cargo was exported through containers worldwide.
Presently, the port was handling one million containers. The BDP would help it upgrade to five million containers by 2026-2027 at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore, he said.
