Mumbai, Apr 10 (UNI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil today said three people were injured in police firing at Jalna, to control the mob involved in stone pelting.

Making a statement in the House on the issue, raised by Ramesh Nikose (Cong), Mr Patil, who also holds Home portfolio, said the incident of desecration of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's statue was noticed at 0600 hrs today and as the police were trying to clean the statue, the mob started pelting stones and even damaged a police vehicle.

Police had to fire 17 rounds to control the mob, in which three persons sustained injuries. He said curfew was clamped in the area, where the statue was desecrated.

Mr Patil said there were many statues in the state which had been erected with and without the permission of the government. He said though practically it was not possible to have one person round-the- clock for every statue, the government would still try to intensify patrolling in the areas where the statues were erected.

The Minister emphasised that it was the duty of those who erect the statue to maintain the same.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Urban Development Rajesh Tope, who hails from Jalna, has rushed to the place.
