Hyderabad, Apr 10 (UNI) Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N Chandrababu Naidu today condemned the lathicharge by the Maharashtra police on TDP workers when they tried to move towards the Babli project site on Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra border.

Addressing the press here, Mr Naidu said, ''it is undemocratic that the police resorted to lathicharge on the TDP activists who wanted to visit the illegal Babli project construction by the Maharashtra government.'' Demanding that AICC President Sonia Gandhi and Centre intervene in the issue and halt the construction of the project soon, he alleged that the Maharashtra government was depriving the rights of Andhra Pradesh by 'illegally' constructing the project across river Godavari.

Stating that the TDP was not trying to gain political mileage as alleged by other political parties, Mr Naidu said, ''the TDP wanted a political solution to the project.'' UNI
