Memorial for Communist leader

Chennai, Apr 10 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu governemnt will erect a fitting memorial to veteran Communist leader Srinivasa Rao at Thiruthuraipoondi, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi informed the state Assembly today.

Responding to Mr V Sivapunniyam (CPI) who said today was the birth anniversary of the late leader and wanted the governemnt to make an announcement in this regard, Mr Karunanidhi recalled the role Srinivas Rao had played in agrarian struggles for workers along with ''Comrade'' Jeevanantham in the erstwhile composite Thanjavur district which was known for landlordism.

Referring to the services rendered by Mr Rao for the welfare of farm workers, he said his government would not go back on the promise.

''Today itself, I will direct the District Collector to take necessary steps to erect a fitting memorial to the Communist stalwart,'' he told the House, amid thumping of desks by the members of the Treasury Benches.
