Krishna appeals against public celebration of his 75th birthday

Mumbai, Apr 10 (UNI) Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna has made a special appeal to his well-wishers in Karnataka not to celebrate his birthday this year.

Mr Krishna is completing 75 years on May 1, which is also observed as Maharashtra Day. His supporters back home are gearing up to celebrate his birthday in style.

In a statement, Mr Krishna said ''This year Karnataka is facing a severe drought situation. People living in the Cauvery river basin are particularly facing tremendous hardships. Scarcity of water and power in villages, towns and cities has affected large segments of population in the State. In this background, it will be inappropriate to celebrate an occasion like my birthday''.

''I have never believed in celebration of birthdays and I never intend to celebrate it in future too. Considering my own reservations about celebration of my birthday, I appeal to my friends and well-wishers to allow me to keep my birthday a simple and private affair,'' he added.
