Convict goes missing from police custody for several hours

Junagadh, Apr 10 (UNI) A man, sentenced to life imprisonment, reportedly escaped briefly from police custody at the civil hospital here, where he was admitted for some medical treatment, only to reappear later.

On the instruction of Inspector-General of Police (Junagadh Range) Mohan Zha, Junagadh Deputy Superintendant of Police (DySP) M M Parmar had paid a surprise visit last night to the hospital where the accused Anirudhsinh Jadeja, was undergoing medical treatment for some ailment at the civil hospital.

He found Jadeja was missing from the hospital, police said today.

There were five policemen -- Madhavsinh Kesrisinh, Naranbhai, Bhimabhai Karsanbhai, Haja Malde and Deepakbhai -- on duty.

Jadeja escaped with Deepakbhai for several hours from the hospital.

The DySP immediately took action against the four policemen on duty. They were arrested under IPCL 224 and 225.

Later, Jadeja reappeared in the hospital, along with Deepakbhai, after several hours disappearance. On their return, Deepakbhai was also arrested, police added.

Jadeja has been sentenced to life imprisonment for gunning down Popatbhai Sorathiya, an MLA, on August 15, 1988, when the latter was hoisting the national flag at the Sangramsinhji high school in Gondal.

Mahipatsinh Jadeja and Popatbhai Sorathiya were political rivals.
