CID arrests a leading cricket bookie from city
Kolkata, Apr 10 (UNI) Criminal Investigation Department(CID) officials today arrested one cricket bookie from the busy Burrabazar area today on charges of betting.
Earlier this month, two more people were arrested from the city on same charge and remanded to police custody. Some incriminating documents and electronic equipment proving their involvement in the World Cup cricket betting were recovered from their possession.
According to the police, acting on a tip-off, CID sleuths raided a house at Burrabazar in Central Kolkata this afternoon and arrested one Basant Gujari alias Jhagrui on charges of cricket betting. One personal computer, a number of cds and a few mobile phones were also recovered and seized from his possession.
Incidentally, Basant Gujari was arrested twice before under same the charges but managed to get bail in absence of any direct evidence of his involvement in betting.
Police was now examining the CDs and the computer and mobile phone data to know the extent of his involvement in the cricket betting.
It is alleged that the person worked as a major conduit among the nationwide cricket betting racket including those in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai.
He would be produced in court tomorrow.
