One killed, many injured in cyclone

Silchar, Apr 9 (UNI) One person was killed and 25 were injured in different parts of Barak Valley when cyclone and hailstorm hit this south Asom region last night.

Noor Ahmed(7) of Badripar village near Sonai in Cachar district was killed when their house collapsed yesterday. The body was recovered from the debris.

Official sources said at least 20 people in parts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts were critically injured due to collapse of their houses. Rescue and relief operations were going on in full swing and officials have been visiting the affected areas to have an on the spot account of the extent of damage.

Power distribution system was affected most. In many places of the three districts electricity lines were snapped which has led the valley into complete darkness.'' Because of the heavy damage, there's no hope of restoration of power within the next 24 hours,'' said Central Asom Electricity Distribution Company (Barak Valley) general manager Susim Nath.
