Bookie arrested for betting on England-Australia World Cup match

Kaithal, Apr 9 (UNI) The Haryana police arrested a cricket bookie who was betting on the World Cup cricket match between England and Australia.

The CIA wing of the district police raided a house here last night and arrested the bookie identified as Sachin, a resident of Vivek Nagar. The police also seized four mobile phones, a coloured TV, two remotes, a booking diary and cash from them .

Giving details here today, SSP Navdeep Singh Virk said that CIA Sub inspector Balbir Singh during patrol last night got information that, Sachin a resident of Vivek Nagar had been betting on a large scale on his mobile on behalf of others. The bets were placed on the runs to be scored in a particular over and total runs by a paricular player, besides the overall result of the match.

Acting swiftly, the police party on getting information obtained a search warrant and then sent a constable in civil clothes with a signed Rs 500 note to the house to place a bet on the match. After the bookie accepted the offer and received the cash from the constable, the police party entered the house.

The raiding party seized the Rs 500 signed note, a diary and Rs 2500 in cash from the accused, besides other items. In the diary, the alleged accused had noted betting transactions worth lakhs of rupees, payment for which was to be made today, the SSP added.
