Badal asks Centre to clear pending sum for police modernisation

Chandigarh, Apr 9 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has urged the Union Home Ministry to immediately release the pending sum of Rs 1.73 crore for the modernisation of the state police.

The Chief Minister who met Home Minister Shivraj Patil at New Delhi today pointed out the centre had not released this amount in the last fiscal year.

Mr Badal also requested Mr Patil to find a way out of the cut imposed restore the funds allocated to Punjab for modernisation of police. He pointed out a sum of Rs 64 crore was the original allocation for Punjab, which was cut down to Rs 20 crore.

The Chief Minister also forcefully pleaded the 60:40 ratio between Punjab and Haryana for appointment of employees on deputation to the Union Territory of Chandigarh as per the Reorganisation Act should be maintained. He told the Home Minister this rule had been grossly flouted by the UT administration over past few years after the formation of the UT cadre.

Mr Badal also sought the release of funds due from the centre for paying arrears to farmers cultivating their land along the fence near the Indo-Pak border in the districts of Amrtisar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur and Ferozepur.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister also brought up the issue of payment of Rs 36.60 crore pending with the Central Government upto 2006-07 for the construction of judicial court complexes on the basis of 50:50 expenditure to be borne by the State and Centre.
