40 beggars arrested following ban on seeking alms

Madurai, Apr 9 (UNI) With the ban on begging in public places coming into force here today, the city police has arrested over 40 beggars.

All the arrested were produced before a local magistrate, police said.

While prominent places in the city, including the famous Meenakshi temple, were free of beggars seeking alms, others elsewhere in the city went into hiding on seeing the police.

The district administration decided to ban begging, in the wake of a recent directive of the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court.
