Hospital performs cervical disc replacement to woman in TN

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Apr 8 (UNI) A Coimbatore based private hospital successfully performed a two-level cervical disc replacement of a 52-year-old woman recently.

In a release here today, Ganga Hospital Orthopadeic and Spine Department Director S Rajasekaran said a patient Shanthi N Chetty, was suffering from severe disc prolapse with spinal cord compression at two levels in carvical spine. The compression of the nerves was giving her unbearable and continuous pain and she was finding it difficult to sleep, he added.

Dr Rajasekaran said a decision to perform the disc replacement surgery was undertaken to avoid fusion. In this rare surgery, an artificial cervical disc was inserted between two servical vertebrae after the prolapsed intervertebral disc was surgically removed to decompass the spinal cord and the nerve root, he added.

He said the newly developed technology will help the patients to maintain normal neck movement. Feasibility of joint replacement would provide better health to patients suffering from spine diseases, he added.

He said artificial disc replacements were being used in cervial and lumbar disc diseases.
