Panaji, Apr 8 (UNI) Easter, marking the resurrection of Lord Jesus Christ, was today celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm in Goa where Catholic Christians constitute the largest minority community.

Ushered in after the four-day austere and penitential season of Lent, the festival was marked with midnight church service followed by solemn Eucharistic celebrations.

Pascal commemoration in many parishes was marked with candle light processions and baptism of new born children. The devout were seen busy thronging local markets for purchasing sweets and other goods for the prayers.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao of Goa and Daman, Governor S C Jamir and Chief Minister Prtapsingh Rane greeted the people on the occasion.

''Easter celebrates the triumph of Christ over death, which is the victory of God's Love over human hatred and of Truth over deceit, signalling the emergence of a new life, of a new society, indeed of a new world order,'' the Archbishop said in his message.

The Governor, in his message, said ''Jesus Christ, by his self-sacrifice, gave us the valuable messages of love, forgiveness, compassion and brotherhood.'' ''In the present day world, afflicted with many man-made evils, the messages of Christ can help transform us and guide us to lead a more meaningful, peaceful and happy life,'' the Governor added.

The Chief Minister, on the other hand, wished the spirit of Easter continues among the people throughout the year.
