Cleanliness Survey ranks Delhi 8th

New Delhi, Apr 8 (UNI) All the fuss by the Delhi government and civic agencies notwithstanding, a 'cleanliness survey' has ranked the national capital at number eight out of 18 state capitals in the country.

Despite the tall claims and huge amount of money being poured down the drain, more than 300 respondents across the city were clearly not satisfied, giving Delhi 99 points, which was far below the all city average of 100 points and from the 144 points earned by Chandigarh to stand at the top of the table.

Chennai (118 points) Kolkata and Bangalooru (108 points each) were ranked second and third on the 'Lifebuoy Swasthya Chetna City Meter', initiated by the Hindustan Lever company to enhance awareness about health, hygiene and cleanliness in the country.

The other top three capitals - Bhubaneshwar (106), Lucknow (103) and Thiruvananthapuram (102) - scored above the all city average of 100 points.

Delhi was tied with Mumbai at the eight spot.

The non-availability of dustbins in public places and dirty roads weighed on the minds of Delhiites when they graded their city on 11 parameters.

Hyderabad, Dehradun, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Ranchi, Bhopal, Patna, Guwahati and Raipur followed Delhi in that order.

The 11 parameters focused on the purity of drinking water, garbage disposal system, clean roads, air pollution, dustbins in public places, public toilets, greenery and plantations, public transport cleanliness, cleanliness in public places, drainage systems and involvement of the municipal authorities in ensuring hygenic conditions.
