Mizoram to use polythene bags for blacktopping

Aizawl, Apr 6 (UNI) The Mizoram Pollution Control Board has initiated a plan to dispose off polythene bags by blacktopping of metal roads.

According to Board Secretary C Lalduhoma, it has been proved that plastic bags that are commonly used here are great material for blacktopping of roads.

''We have discussed it with public works department (PWD) and they agreed to test the plastic bags as materials for road construction,'' Mr Lalduhoma said adding that the idea has left all concerned.

Outlining the strategy he said the public would be asked to contribute polythene bags for which some remuneration would be given and ''every one will be willing to dispose off their used polythene bags in exchange of money while we will avoid much ecological destruction,'' he added.

PWD has identified Bazar Bungkawn to Kulikawn and Sikulpuikawn to Canteen Square via Khatla of Aizawl town would be repaired with the formula of tar plus plastic bags.

Meanwhile, the Pollution Control Board further expressed concern over the improper drainage system in the Aizawl Civil Hospital.

Mr Lalduhoma said, the Comptroller&Auditor General of India (CAG) Report 2006 also mentioned the hospital is yet to commission the incinerator for bio-medical waste even a few years after it was installed.

Hospital authorities, however, said that the fault lies with the Power&Electricity department which could not give the necessary power supply to run the incinerator.
