Good Friday observed with traditional reverence
Kolkata, Apr 6: Christians across the state today observed fast and abstinence to observe the crucification of Jesus Christ several centuries ago on the occasion of Good Friday.
Early morning mass was held in all the churches here to mark the occasion.
Good Friday, called Feria VI in Parasceve in the Roman Missal, is the English designation of Friday in Holy Week that is the Friday on which the Church keeps the anniversary of the Crucification of Jesus Christ.
Mass and prayers were held at the St Paul's Cathedral today to observe the event.
Thus Good Friday is the Friday before Easter or Pascha. It commemorates the crucification and death of Jesus at Calvary.
Special prayer services are held on this day with readings from the Gospel giving accounts of the events leading up to the crucification. Mainstream Christian churches view Christ's crucification as a voluntary and vicarious act, and one by which, along with resurrection on the third day, death itself was conquered.
