Punjab Wheat yield to surpass target

Moga, Apr 5: Despite inclement weather and frequent squall, wheat production this year was expected to surpass the target of 145 lakh MT in Punjab by at least 30,000 to 50,000 MT, Dr Gurdial Singh Gill, Joint Director Punjab Agriculture said here.

The better wheat seed supply had resulted in maximum yield of 42.50 quintals per hectare, Dr Gill said while presiding over a kharif crop training camp of farmers.

Dr Gill also stated that the Department of Agriculture had decided to reduce about one lakh hectares of area under paddy cultivation in the coming kharif season.

Paddy will be sown in area of 25 lakh hectares compared to 25.97 lakh hectares last year and production of paddy was expected to be 95 lakh MT as compared to 99.7 lakh MT, he said yesterday.

The Joint Director also stated that this year cotton will be sown in an area of 6.50 lakh hectares against 6.07 lakh hectares and cotton production will be expected 28.75 lakh bales as compared to 24.85 lakh bales last year.

More than 2,000 progressive farmers participated in the camp which was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner Dr Arvinder Singh.
