Memon brothers' bail plea deferred

Mumbai, Apr 5 (UNI) The designated TADA court here today deferred till April 9 the bail plea of Memon brothers, prime convicts in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case.

TADA Judge P D Kode deferred the bail plea as their advocates were not present.

Memon brothers - Yaqoob, Yusuf and Issa- the three brothers of prime absconding accused Tiger Memon had earlier moved a bail plea on September 12 last year after they were convicted by the designated court under the TADA Act for their involvement in serial bomb blasts that rocked the metropolis on March 12, 1993.

Yaqoob, a Chartered Accountant by profession, is suffering from neurological problem. However, Issa and Yusuf are suffering from skin disease and other ailments.

All of them have contended the court to grant them interim bail to enable to receive treatment in private hospital at their expenditure.

Yusuf and Isa were on bail on medical grounds but were taken into custody after they were convicted by the court.

As a rule, the court cannot grant a bail to a convict after he is found guilty as the court can direct jail authorities or the government-run hospitals to provide treatment to the accused.

It may be recalled that on April 19, the court will pronounce the quantum of punishment phase wise to be awarded to the 100 convicts, including cine star Sanjay Dutt, members of Memon family and others.
