Madikeri, Karnataka, Apr 5 (UNI) The Karnataka Kodava Academy has decided to hold a global Kodava Sammelan here for three days from December 23.

At a special meeting convened by Academy Chairperson Dotty Poovaiah yesterday, Presidents of different Kodava Samajas and others said the Sammelan should focus mainly on the culture, life and heritage of Kodavas. Fourteen different committees were formed during the meeting to take up various responsibilities.

A section of the members suggested that the Sammelan be held at Gonicoppa since the influence of Kerala was spreading fast in South Kodagu. However, the majority decided on Madikeri as the town was accessible and enjoyed heavy inflow of tourists. It was also stated that the Sammelan should be beyond caste, creed and language.

The meeting decided to request the Union and State Governments for funds. The State Government would be sought to release Rs one crore.

Ms Poovaiah said Kannada and Culture Minister Mahadeva Prasad had agreed to release Rs ten lakh and a fresh appeal would be submitted for more funds. The Sammelan would pressurise the Government to bring Kodava language in the eighth schedule, she added.
