Chandigarh, Apr 5 (UNI) The Punjab Government has suspended former State Police Chief S S Virk on the charge of making a major land deal in violation of service rules.

The Home Department issued orders to this effect yesterday, Home Secretary S S Gill said. Mr Virk, who was heading Punjab Police Housing Corporation, WILL be headquartered at Chandigarh during his suspension period.

Mr Virk, an IPS officer of the 1970 batch, was removed from the post of Director General of Police by the Election Commission before the February 13 Assembly elections in the state, on Shiromani Akali Dal's complaint that his continuation on the post would hamper the free and fair conduct of polls in the state.

Mr Virk had been labelled close to then chief minister Amarinder Singh and the SAD had accused him of receiving undue favours from the Congress govrnment.
