ECIL to prepare MNICs for Indian citizens
Tirupati, Apr 5 (UNI) Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) in association with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) will issue 30 lakh Multipurpose National Identity Cards (MNICs) as part of a pilot project to Indian citizens.
Addressing a press conference here today ECIL Chairman and Managing Director K S Rajasekhara Rao said the data required for the MNICs under the pilot project would be collected from over 3000 villages in 12 states and a union territory by July 2007.
Mr Rao said ECIL would prepare MNICs to all Indian nationals.
He said the MNIC would contain informations establishing his or her identity as an Indian citizen, residential status and proof of age.
After the completion of the pilot project, similar cards in crores would be issued to the entire population of the country.
Mr Rao said state-of-the-art infrastructure was being set up at the company to undertake the mammoth project of preparing the MNICs.
The MNICs would be prepared under the supervision of the Registrar General of India, he added.
