Patna, Apr 5 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today affirmed that pace of development had acclerated following several steps of the state government and said it would achieve the status of a developed state by 2015.

Addressing a conference here, Mr Kumar said to achieve the goal, the government had accorded top priority to the infrastructural development under which quality roads were being constructed, while special attention had been given to the health, education and power sectors.

In order to boost the power sector, the existing power stations were being modernised and new units were also being set up to cater to the needs of the state, he said adding the government had also initiated several steps for industrialisation in the state.

He said the government was also concentrating on the agricultural activities of the state as it was the backbone of Bihar's economy.

Apart from introducing modern technology in the sector, the government was providing better facilities for irrigation, which could be possible through interlinking of rivers between Bihar and Jahrkhand, he added.

Mr Kumar said development would be a distant dream without education and steps had been taken for repairing of dilapidated school buildings, while construction of new school buildings had also been taken up in far-flung areas of the state.

He said several incentives had already been announced to check the ''drop-out'' among girl students. With the new initiatives taken by the state government, the education scenario in Bihar would change in the coming days, he hoped.

Talking about the women empowerment, Mr Kumar claimed that Bihar had pioneered in this area by providing fifty per cent reservation to women in Panchayati Raj institutions. The self-confidence among the women in rural areas had increased following reservation for them at grassroot level, he added.
