Anti-left forces will not succeed in toppling WB govt: Karat

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 5 (UNI) The attempt by anti-left forces to topple the Buddhadeb Bhattacharya government by replicating a 'vimochana samaram' (liberation struggle that brought down the first Communist government in Kerala) will not succeed in West Bengal, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said today.

''The Trinamool Congress, the Congress, the BJP and the Naxalities had joined together to topple the Bengal government and the truth would come out despite these campaigns against the left government,'' he told a public meeting organised in connection with the golden jubilee celebration of the first Communist government in the state.

The party would organise campaigns against the false propaganda of the anti-left forces throughout the country to bring out the truth of the Nandigram incident, in which 14 people were killed, Mr Karat said.

The police entered Nandigram to restore peace in the area after anti-social elements unleashed terror in the region. The CPI(M) activists and those supporting the party were driven out of Nandigram and a girl was even raped. The police were called in after the incident.

It was reported that 14 people were killed in police firing.

However, only eight people were killed in police firing and six were killed in the violence, he said.

All the left governments of Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura were in the vanguard for ensuring that the rights of workers were protected. In wake of the new liberalisation and privatisation policies adopted by the Centre, the left governments were striving to find alternatives to overcome this.

Hitting out at America for its anti-Communist policy, Mr Karat said, it was now a known fact that the American imperialism had tried to topple the left governments in Kerala and West Bengal. The CIA had funded the struggle to bring down the left governments in Kerala in 1957-59 and in 1967-69 in West Bengal. The left forces were in frequent fight against these imperialist forces and the people should be mobilised against such forces, he added.
