TN: Malaysian senator dead

Chennai, Apr 4: Malaysian Senate Member Datto Sivalingam died at a private hospital here today following a heart attack.He was 62.

Mr Sivalingam, who suffered the attack, was rushed to the hospital at suburban Pallavaram at 1015 hrs and given Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, he died at 1040 hrs due to acute coronory syndrome.

Hospital sources told UNI that Mr Sivalingam had no pulse, no blood pressure and no respiration when he was brought to the hospital.

''We provided the best of treatment and also gave Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. But there was no response. He died at 1040 hrs.'' The body was handed over to his family members hospital sources added.

Police sources said that Mr Sivalingam was on a private visit to the city.

Dato Sivalingam was the Selangor (BN-MIC) State Assembly man for Ijuk and Member of the Selangor State Executive Council (Exco).

He Joined the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) in 1968 at the age of 20. In 1986, he was elected as a Senator by the Selangor State Legislative Assembly.

Dato Sivalingam received the Darjah Kebesaran Dato' Paduka Mahkota Selangor (DPMS) Kelas Kedua Award which carries the title Dato' by the Selangor State Government in March 1999.
