Puducherry, Apr 4: The Puducherry administration would start construction work for the new assembly building this year, Chief Minister N Rangasamy told the legislative assemby today.

Replying to a question, Mr Rangasamy said the government had not given permission to anyone to organise agitations near the Manakkula Vinayagar temple and Aurobindo Ashram and since, there was no space for agitations near the chief secretariat, the agitators are selecting new areas.

When DMK member R Siva pointed out that shifting of the legislative assembly alone could resolve this problem, Mr Rangasamy said the new assembly building would be constructed at the regulatory market area at Thattanchavady and the construction work would commence begin year.

Answering another question the Chief Minsiter said that due to financial constrains as many as 1439 applications for marriage assistance for BPL families were pending and it would be cleared in a couple of months.

He said 210 persons were benefitted under the scheme during 2005-06 and 648 during 2006-07.
