Marriage registration mandatory in Mizoram

Aizawl, Apr 4: The Mizoram Assembly today passed the Compulsory Registration of Marriages Bill, 2007.

According to the act, all the marriages including re-marriages in any caste, tribe or religion should be recorded and the government would appoint Registrars of marriages.

No marriages contracted in the state would be valid if it is not recorded under the act within the stipulated period, State Law Secretary P Chakraborty said adding that any Registrar who fails to record a marriage should be punished with simple imprisonment for a term, may extend to three months or fine up to Rs 500 or both.

He further said making false statement regarding marriage shall, on conviction, be punished for six months simple imprisonment or Rs 1000 or both.
