YSR calls Council revival a new chapter in AP's history

Hyderabad, Apr 3 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said a new chapter had begun in the history of the state with the revival of the Legislative Council after nearly two decades.

Congratulating Mr A Chakrapani who was unanimously elected as Council Chairman, Dr Reddy said he concurred with the former's opinions expressed in his book 'Second Chamber of Legislature a Must' released by Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

Praising Mr Chakrapani, he said the Upper House had honoured itself by electing a multi-faceted personality.

Though Mr Chakrapani was elected Deputy Chairman of the Council in 1985, the Upper House was abolished after a short time and it did not have the opportunity to seek his guidance.

Stressing on the need for a Legislative Council in the changed circumstances, Dr Reddy said now the government and the legislature would benefit from the Chairman's vast knowledge and experience.

CPI Leader Puvvada Nageswara Rao said revival of the Legislative Council would be written with golden letters in the history of Andhra Pradesh.

Even as he was congratulating the Chief Minister for struggling for three years to fulfill his party's election promise of reviving the Upper House, the Chairman pointed out it took only 30 days to abolish it.

''Yes sir, to build anything is difficult. Destruction is very very easy,'' Mr Rao said.
