Prof Bajaj appointed Vice-Chairman of Punjab Planning Board

Chandigarh, Apr 3 (UNI) The Punjab Government has appointed Prof J S Bajaj, a well-known physican and diabetologists as Vice-Chairman of State Planning Board in the rank of Cabinet Minister with immediate effect, an official spokesman said.

Prof Bajaj has held offices of distinction in several national and international speciality and research organisation. He was the first scientist from outside Europe and the US to have been elected as the President of the International Diabetes Federation.

Prof Bajaj has worked as Honorary President of the International Diabetes Federation, Chairman of the South East Asia Regional Association for Medical Education, Honorary President, Diabetic Association of India and Chairman, Credential Committee, National Academy of Medical Sciences.

He was associated with the Department of Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi since 1960 and appointed honorary Physician to the President of India (1977-82) and again from 1987-92.

He is the first biomedical scientist ever to have been appointed as Member Planning Commission in 1991 in the rank of Minister of State.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was decorated with Padma Shri by President of India in 1981 and the coveted Padma Bhushan in 1982.
