New Delhi, Apr 3 (UNI) Private container train operators can now seek permission any time throughout the year to run container trains on Railways.

The permission was earlier open only for a month and the private operators were facing difficulties in completing the process of applying for it within the stipulated period.

The Indian Railways' (Permission for operators to more container trains on Indian Railways) Amendment Rules, 2007 have been amended accordingly, an official release said here.

The Railway Ministry had in January last finalised the model concession agreement for operation of pvt container trains on Delhi-Mumbai route under which 14 new players have been permitted for running container trains, apart from the Container Corporation of India (Concor), which till date, had a monopoly on this service.

It is expected that the coming two months, some of these players would be ready with their infrastructure for running their own trains and setting up container terminals at strategic locations throughout the country.

The Ministry has set itself a target of increasing its container traffic to 100 million tonnes by 2011-12 from the present 20 million tonnes, through the opening of this sector.

Allowing private players to run container trains is one of the several key decisions the Railway Ministry has taken to increase its revenues.

The Railways earned a profit of almost Rs 20,000 crore in the last finanacial year, compared to Rs 14,700 crore earned in the preceding year.
