Nehru architect of modern India: Union HRD Minister
Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Apr 3 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Human Resources and Development D Purandareswari Devi paid glowing tributes to India's first Prime Minister Jawharlal Nehru and described him as the architect of modern, democratic and secular India.
She was speaking at a seminar on 'Jawaharlal Nehru's philosophy - reflection' at Nagarjuna University college near here today.
Under the stewardship of Nehru, who promoted scientific temper and advocated mixed economy, the country made tremendious strides, she said.
Mrs Purandandareswari appreciated the contribution made by Nehru's grandson and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions by amending the Constitution. Rajiv gave a fillip to rural administration, she remarked.
On the role of opposition parties in a democracy, she said they should not hamper the country's progress. Levelling criticism at the government should not be their only role, she said, and observed that Nehru used to respect the constructive view of opposition parties.
