Kerala to institute Laurie Baker Award

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 3 (UNI) The Kerala Government will institute an award in the name of veteran architect and pioneer of low-cost housing technology, Mr Laurie Baker, who passed away on Sunday, Housing Minister Binoy Vishwom said here.

The award comprising Rs one lakh would be given to voluntary organistaions bringing in innovations in the field of housing, a release said here today.

The Nirmithi Kendras, building shelters (Cost-Effective Environment-Friendly Shelter Development Strategy) in Kerala would be named after Mr Baker, he said.

A pioneer of cost effective architecture movement in India, Mr Baker had become well known for designing and building near-impossibly low cost, high quality homes, with a great portion of his work suited to or built for lower-middle to lower class clients.
